During the summer months of July and August, an extra cheese market takes place every Tuesday evening on the Waagplein in Alkmaar. The Tuesday evening cheese market starts at 19:00 and lasts until 21:00.
The course of the cheese market on Tuesday evening is the same as on Friday morning.
A Tuesday evening cheese market looks like this:
- The cheeses are put on the Waagplein before the market starts.
- The bell is rung at 19:00, the market can begin!
- Cheese carriers carry the cheeses on and off on berries. The berries hold as much as 160 kilos of cheese!
- In the Weighing House, the cheeses are weighed.
- Traders and farmers negotiate the price of the cheese.
- Ingrowers throw the cheeses onto wagons so that they can be transported further.
- Cheese girls and boys inform visitors about the goings-on at the Cheese Market.
Location and directions
By car
The cheese market in the city centre at Waagplein. For directions to the car parks, use the PRIS (parking route information system) on the signs.
Parking in general
We advise against entering the city centre by car on Friday morning. It is best to park in one of the car parks or car parks around the centre, such as the P+R sites Bergermeer and Oudorp from where you can take the bus to the centre. By public transport
The cheese market is easy to reach by public transport. Alkmaar has a train station a 5-minute walk from Waagplein. From Amsterdam, it is only 35 minutes by train to Alkmaar. From the surrounding villages you can also get to Alkmaar by bus.
